Comprehensive Instructor Workshop
in Medical Simulation

For directors or faculty of a current
or prospective simulation program

This intensive immersion in healthcare simulation is led by experienced simulation educators and covers all high-level elements and concepts involved in running a simulation program. Attendees join a growing community of Institute graduates who are positioned as leaders in the field. Daily formats vary and include simulation scenarios, lectures, small and large group discussions, case studies, and practical exercises with feedback. The week includes two evening social events for additional networking and experience sharing.

Special subtracks for technicians or healthcare workers in obstetrics are offered periodically in conjunction with the Comprehensive Course.

Enrollment and cancellation policy
After you have submitted your application materials as described above, you should expect to receive a decision by email within two weeks. Upon acceptance, you must reconfirm your intention to attend by replying to the acceptance email.

Tuition is due two weeks after receiving acceptance. When a class fills up, we start a waiting list. If you must cancel and another candidate can fill your seat, we will refund your tuition less $100 for administration and processing. If we cannot fill your seat, we will refund half your tuition less.

HEALTHCARE ADVENTURES

Workshops for leadership and management teams
(non-clinicians or mixed groups)

Healthcare Adventures are customized team-training workshops for leadership and management teams across the healthcare spectrum. Designed to improve individual and team performance by developing collaboration and communication, the HCA workshops includes challenges with a simulated patient in a highly realistic clinical environment. Yes, non-clinicians actually get the chance to care for a patient and experience real-life issues first hand. It’s an eye-opener!

CMS faculty and professional facilitators work with the team before the simulation, discussing objectives and expectations, and again after the simulation, identifying important interactions, key learnings and actionable strategies. This allows the group to turn learning into action immediately, by working on a real-world project with the help and support of the CMS facilitators. Topics include teamwork, effective communication, resource management and performance enhancement.

Teams of 6 to 10 people get the most from the HCA workshop.

ACRM-F4 and MOCA Workshops

CMS has conducted crisis management workshops for anesthesia residents since 1994, and for all Harvard Medical School-affiliated faculty since 2001. With our endorsement by the American Society of Anesthesiologists, we offer programs for private practice and academic anesthesiologists who wish to challenge themselves and develop and practice their crisis management skills. These intensive one day workshops have been designed to meet the MOCA® Part IV simulation requirement and have been approved for 7.5 AMA PRA Category 1 continuing education credits and are also eligible for Risk Management Study.

CMS Anesthesia Crisis Resource Management workshops are designed for those anesthesiologists seeking to practice their skills in managing critical events. The overall focus of these workshops is on learning the type of teamwork and generic skills needed when managing any kind of infrequent but critical event in anesthesia and opportunities will be made available to learn skills in managing certain specific events. During the workshops, participants requiring MOCA® certification will each have a turn as the primary anesthesiologist caring for the patient.

Please note that if you are from BWH, BIDMC, CHB, MGH TUFTS, NWH, or MEEI you must register for the workshop through your scheduler. If you desire MOCA certification you must tell your scheduler before coming to CMS. All others should register through the website. We must know beforehand if you want to use this workshop to meet your MOCA requirement. We cannot register you for MOCA credit on the day of the workshop or after you have taken the workshop.

The Center for Medical Simulation is an endorsed program in the American Society of Anesthesiologists’ Simulation Education Network, and has ensured that this workshop complies with the American Board of Anesthesiologists’ Maintenance of Certification in Anesthesia MOCA® Part IV simulation requirements. MOCA® is a registered certification mark of The American Board of Anesthesiology, Inc.

IMS Graduate Course

For those who have completed the Comprehensive Instructor Workshop or Instructor Training courses at IMS.

Designed to prepare leaders in simulation for challenges and opportunities involved in bringing significant reform to healthcare education. This course explores methods and tools that leaders can use to enhance and expand their simulation program.

The graduate course includes two two-hour webinars and a three-day onsite course. To build skills, community, and simulation cases to run on-site, the webinars are scheduled for March 29 and April 26, 2012, at 4-6 p.m. EDT (GMT – 5). The on-site course runs four full days from May 15-18, 2012, here at the Center for Medical Simulation (CMS) in Cambridge.

The daily format varies and includes advanced leadership modules, advanced debriefing practice, and teaches participants how to establish their own simulation instructor training program. Evening social events provide additional opportunities for networking, fellowship and support.

Topics vary each year to include:

Strategic frameworks and leadership tools
Innovative ways to use simulation technology for education and assessment
Developing effective simulation initiatives in healthcare
